Organisation

Brighter Communities Worldwide is governed by the Board of Directors in Ireland and the Board of Directors in Kenya. The Boards are composed of 10 Directors plus the Chief Executive.

The boards each meet five-six times a year and have ultimate responsibility for directing the affairs of Brighter Communities Worldwide, ensuring it is solvent, well-run and delivering the outcomes for which it has been set up. The boards are responsible for the strategic direction, safeguarding the ethos and are responsible for the audit and finance of Brighter Communities Worldwide including money, insurance and legalities.

The directors have responsibility for, and are aware of the risks associated with the operating activities of Brighter Communities Worldwide.

Adequate systems of internal control are in place which aim to ensure compliance with laws and policies, ensure efficient and effective use of resources, safeguard assets and maintain the integrity of financial information produced. Financial information is subject to detailed review at board level.

The executive committee deals with any urgent matters in between board meetings, and ensures board decisions are implemented.

The day-to-day management of the organisation is delegated to the CEO and staff in Ireland and in Kenya.

Board of Directors in Ireland

board and staff/Sean O Sullivan-new

Sean O Sullivan is the chairperson of Brighter Communities Worldwide. Sean is the Head of Enterprise, Local Enterprise Office South Cork (Cork County Council). He is an experienced Director and Board member with over 35 years of experience in business and enterprise. Sean has served on many other boards including Lee Valley Enterprise Board; UCC IGNITE; West Cork Leader Cooperative Society Ltd; West Cork Development Partnership; Briery Gap Theatre; LEO National Enterprise Education Committee; EMERGE Ethnic Minority Entrepreneur Programme and FUTURALLIA International Business Network. He is currently a Director of both Macroom E Enterprise Centre and Camden Fort Meagher Developments DAC. Born in Ghana, Sean then spent a formative 20 years in Africa of which the last 14 of those lived in Kenya.

Linden Edgell is the vice chairperson of Brighter Communities Worldwide. Linden is the Global Director of Sustainability and head of the Corporate Foundation for an international consulting firm. In this capacity, she leads the organisation's approach to the Sustainable Development Goals and its interactions with leading business groups, UN agencies and other organisations. She is a social scientist by training, and has worked with communities across the world in developing, implementing and evaluating a range of social investment and CSR programs.

Linden has also been involved in the non profit sector. She served on the global Board for the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) for 6 years, 3 of those as Deputy Chair. Prior to that she served 3 years on the Strategic Planning Committee and was on the Board of Guides Australia serving as Assistant Chief Commissioner for 5 years.

Linden Edgell has been a long time supporter of Brighter Communities Worldwide. She has visited Londiani on many occasions and been involved with leading Harambees with participants from Australia and New Zealand. In 2012/13 she took a sabbatical from work for several months to live in Londiani and work on several projects including the development of the 2013 - 17 Strategic Plan. She has also facilitated workshops with the Brighter Communities Worldwide Board on several occasions.

Anne Healy is a Clinical Nurse Manager 2 in the Mercy University Hospital, Cork. She is qualified in emergency nursing and Midwifery. Anne brings a wealth of health and development experience to the board. She previously volunteered with Concern Worldwide working as Health and Nutrition Programme Manager in Burundi and has volunteered in Kenya many times since the organisation’s inception. Anne has been project leader for 4 volunteer teams, and has been instrumental in the development of Brighter Communities Worldwide’s Remote Emergency Care programme. Anne has also directed Essential Obstetric and Newborn Care Courses and Maternal Health Courses in Kenya and in Ireland and co-created Brighter Communities Worldwide’s Maternal, Neo natal and child health strategy. Anne also volunteered with Special Olympics National and World games and was involved in the setting up of Leeside Legends Special Olympics Athletics club.

Andrew Bird is a dairy and tillage farmer on Cobh island.  He has travelled extensively including a visit to Londiani, Kenya to learn more about Brighter Communities Worldwide community development programmes.  Andrew is well experienced in board management with involvement at board level in several farming and local community organisations.

Avril Warren joins the board having been a keen supporter of Brighter Communities Worldwide from its earliest beginnings. Avril has 20 years experience as a Chartered Accountant having worked in a number of different sectors. Avril is passionate about development and spent three years working with Concern Worldwide as a volunteer accountant in Rwanda, Sierra Leone and Liberia. Avril also holds a diploma in Development Studies from University College Cork.

Catherine Donohoe is the Hospital Manager of Mayo University Hospital in Castlebar. She is extremely resilient and solution driven and brings to the board team management skills, risk management skills and a deep understanding of the value and importance of good governance. Catherine is passionate about health and community development, she is involved in the activities and management of the West of Ireland Kenyan Partnership and strongly committed to the links between both countries. Catherine has spent time in Kenya getting to know the programmes and the people involved.

Eileen Moore is a senior professional with over 20 years experience in Financial Services. Her professional skills support Business & IT strategy and she is skilled in all phases of the development life cycle from analysing business requirements to feasibility analysis, functional design through to implementation and enhancement. Eileen has been a supporter of the work of Brighter Communities Worldwide for many years and she is passionate about people.

Roisin O Neill is a self-motivated professional with extensive experience working in digital and virtual event management and a passion for community development. She works as an Events Executive planning large-scale virtual and physical events and conferences, responsible for management of all aspects of the event life-cycle. Rosin has a BA in Social Science and Post Graduate Diploma in Public Relations with event management, online PR and social media. She is an active volunteer with Brighter Communities Worldwide since 2018 in Kenya and in Ireland. Since the pandemic began, she has supported development and implementation of a multi-media marketing campaign specifically related to COVID-19 to help roll out effective strategies for fundraising and awareness purposes.

 

 

Board of Directors in Kenya

Dr Betty Langat

Dr. Betty Langat is the Country Director and Chairperson of the Board of Directors. She is also the District Medical Services Officer in Kipkelion District. She has worked in partnership with Brighter Communities Worldwide for many years, and brings her Health and Medical expertise to the Board of Directors.

Anna Mainek

Anna Mainek retired as Country Director in 2012 but remains on the board of Brighter Communities Worldwide. She worked with Brighter Communities Worldwide since its inception in 2002 until her retirement last year. Anna is from Lelsothet Village, near Londiani. She is a very experienced Life Skills Trainer, and has a vast knowledge of community development working with many community groups throughout the District.

Selinah J Kibogy

Selinah J Kibogy has 18 years experience acquired while working in the Education, Development and Emergency Response Sectors. Academic qualifications include studies in Education and postgraduate studies in Educational Administration, Planning (MED) at the University of Nairobi and currently undertaking a PHD in Educational Administration and Planning . She also has taken a course in Management and Development programme at University of California (UCLAA) 2008. Her greatest interest is in capacity development especially in policy making, research, networking, and Emergency risk reduction. She has experience working in various Government Ministries, Civil society, Private sector, the Public Sector and Volunteering Organisations.

Jonah Tonui

Jonah Tonui lives in Londiani and has over 30 years experience working with NGOS. Jonah has vast financial experience and accounting experience. Jonah has served on the boards of Kapkondor Secondary school Londiani. He was the Chairman of Londiani District Hosptial Committee during the construction of the Operating Theatre funded by Brighter Communities Worldwide and Irish Aid. He has excellent project management and community development skills.

Andrew Macharia is a retired Headmaster from Londiani. He brings a wealth of educational experience to the board, with experience across more than eight different schools in Kericho County. Andrew also has strong governance experience, and has served on many boards including Sacred Hills Girls School in Londiani, Chairman of Finch Secondary School Board and Chairman of Huruma Estate.

Annah Chelangat Soi is the Nurse in Charge of Londiani Sub County Hospital. She is a registered nurse and midwife in Kenya with 35 years experience across various health facilities in Kenya. Annah has been involved with Brighter Communities Worldwide since its inception and a key member of the Londiani Sub County Hospital/Mayo University Hospital link team. She brings a wealth of experience, knowledge and passion for health to the board.

board and staff/Dickson Sitienei

Dickson Sitienei is from Kunyak and a founding member of the Nduro Water Project. Dickson first volunteered with Brighter Communities Worldwide during a cholera outbreak in Kunyak in 2009. From this outbreak, the Nduro Water Project was developed. Dickson brings a wealth of community development to the board through his involvement in many community projects. He has served on several boards including Chairman of the Parent Teacher Association of Kunyak Secondary School and Board member of Kipkelion West Alcohol Drink Regulatory.

Fidelis Mambo Nyamari is trained in Envrionmental Management by the Kenya Wildlife Service Training Institute. Fidelis has vast experience in sustainable agriculture programmes and has led the development of the Franciscan Peace and Environment Centre in Molo.

Martin Ballantyne

Martin Ballantyne has been involved in Brighter Communities Worldwide since its inception and first travelled to Kenya in 2003 on honeymoon and was married again in the village of Lelsothet!

Martin is currently the CEO of Brighter Communities Worldwide. Martin has held multiple roles in Brighter Communities Worldwide since 2002 including Board Member, Project Leader for volunteer groups, Trainer of volunteer groups and Executive Director. Martin is also a member of the Brighter Communities Worldwide Kenya Board of Directors.

Martin is passionate about people, community development and building capacity amongst communities. Martin spends vast amounts of time in Kenya building partnerships with communities, government ministries and other NGOS. Martin works very closely with the staff team in Ireland and in Kenya.

Martin has vast experience in Accounting, Business and Management through previous employment roles in both the non-profit and corporate sectors.
