Harambee 2016
Volunteer with us!
Harambee is a Swahili word which means working together and this is what Friends of Londiani’s volunteering projects are all about.
What will volunteers be doing in Kenya?
Throughout the year staff and volunteers from the local community work on development programmes that tackle issues related to health, education, water and economic empowerment.
Volunteers from overseas are hands-on, working in the community as a team. They share skills and knowledge while gaining insight into the challenges of life in rural Kenya.
Programmes include:
- Facilitating community based courses – for example – Wilderness First Aid, Business Training, Lifeskills Peer Education and Maternal Health Courses
- Healthy Schools Programme – work with students and teachers to make school a healthier place by educating them about health issues and building washrooms and latrines
- Support the Public Health Office with outreach clinics providing vaccination and health checks for people who don’t live near health clinics and hospitals
- Collaborate with local community health workers and make homes a healthier place, for example by installing smokeless stoves
Don’t worry if you think you don’t have skills for any of the above – we provide all the training you need to draw on your existing skills and help develop new ones.
Simply go with an open mind, a flexible nature and a willingness to help. The local people will inspire you with their positive attitude, perseverance and ingenuity. Share the experience with teammates who start out as strangers and become close friends.
It’s a personally enriching experience – you’ll come home with a wealth of new memories and a whole new perspective on life.
