We want to tell you about the work we’re doing in Kenya to change attitudes to women and female genital mutilation (FGM).

6^th February 2015 is Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation Day.

It’s an opportunity to raise the profile of an issue that affects the lives of many women across the world and to share the positive impact we’re having here in Kenya. Since 2009 we have been running an FGM Abandonment Programme which aims to replace FGM with an Alternative Rite of Passage. Thanks to the money you donate, more than 4,500 girls have graduated from the programme and it is delivering real results. The work we have been doing leads to a change of attitude among men, women, boys and girls regarding early marriage, early child bearing and female education, as well as a rejection of FGM. 

More importantly, the girls are spared the debilitating physical effects of female genital circumcision and learn that they have a measure of control over their own destiny and their fertility. In turn this empowers them to continue their education and make informed choices about marriage and childbearing.  The result is better physical health and later marriage, leading to better educational attainment and better economic prospects for the girls in these communities.
