World Water Day. Water is...

25 March 2015
Water, do not waste it as we need it and it is valuable

Direct translation – Water, do not waste it as we need it and it is valuable!

World Water Day is celebrated on Sunday March 22nd. A drop of water is flexible. A drop of water is powerful. A drop of water is in demand.

  • Water is health – clean hands can save your life.
  • Water is equality – every day women spend millions of hours carrying water.

Schools around Ireland are taking part in a Walk for Water as part of their involvement in the Green Schools Campaign.

5th & 6th class of Gael Scoil Mainistir na Corann in Midleton Walked 6km for Water and each student carried 3ltrs of water in a backpack in solidarity with children all over the world who walk miles each day to collect water for their families.

Children in Londiani are well used to carrying 3ltrs and more of water every day when they walk from home to collect water for their families. Friends of Londiani work with their communities to come up with solutions that will provide access to clean water and improve health. Solutions that include rainwater harvesting, gravity water fed schemes, shallow bore holes with handpumps.

Clean water means healthy babies, children and adults. Clean water means more days in school for children and less days they have to stay home sick. Clean water means improved sanitation and hygiene. Clean water means more time available to girls and women to stay in school, to set up business, to become independent and earn a living.
