FOL and WAGGGS launch campaign to assist girls go to school in Londiani

02 June 2010
Friends of Londiani in partnership with the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) have just launched a new campaign called “Girls for Girls”. The essence of it is that girls cannot go to school for 1 week a month once they reach puberty as they cannot afford basic sanitary towels. Additionally, the conditions of the toilets at school in Londiani are very basic and unhygienic and often don’t exist for girls. This gives the girls another reason not to go to school. In the Kipkelion District there are 17,122 girls affected by this problem. We hope to target 4500 girls in the first year, and then spread across the District in time. The idea of this campaign is to raise enough money over 12 months to contribute to a sustainable project which will provide cheaper sanitary towels in the community, which in turn will enable more girls to go to school. All proceeds from the project will be invested through FOL’s Health programmes in schools to provide latrines and facilities for girls. It will also be coupled with education on health, hygiene etc. Women in the community will be trained in the skills needed make the towels. A management team has been set up which includes a fundraising team, programme, PR and education. It only costs $2 a month for 12 months! Click here to learn more and donate!
