Summer Harambee project cancelled

15 July 2010
The Directors of Friends of Londiani Ireland would like to express their deep regret over the cancellation of the Summer Harambee volunteer project in Kenya. This project involved 26 Irish volunteers and was due to take place from the 17th July to 8th August 2010. Following the disputed presidential election in late 2007, the Kenyan Government undertook to amend their constitution. A referendum on the new proposed constitution is scheduled for the 4th August 2010. There are groups campaigning for both sides at the moment and due to anticipated disruptions in the country, Friends of Londiani have decided to cancel the imminent volunteer project. Friends of Londiani has been organising volunteer projects in Kenya since 2002 and has an exemplary safety record. Whilst it is regrettable to cancel this project, the safety of volunteers and staff is of paramount importance to Friends of Londiani. The work of FOL is largely run by local communities. The safety of all our partners is of utmost importance, and the situation will be monitored before the planned work will continue. All fundraised money will go towards the ongoing projects to assist the people for whom it was intended. FOL has a strong relationship with the communities in Kipkelion District and hope to continue the partnerships formed in due course.
