July 2016 Harambee team - Karibu!

This week we have welcomed five more volunteers to Kenya as part of the Harambee 2016 Team - Tasha Stack, Ciara Mulry, Lynne Pasley, Jill Butler and Aoife O Hanlon. Women from villages acrosss the community gave a great welcome to the entire team as they arrived in Londiani following their journey from Ireland to Nairobi.

The volunteers will join staff and volunteers from here in community to work on development programmes that tackle issues related to health, education, water and economic empowerment.

The projects are hands-on, working in the community as a team. Programmes include:

  • Facilitating community based courses – for example – Wilderness First Aid, Business Training, Lifeskills Peer Education and Maternal Health Courses
  • Healthy Schools Programme – work with students and teachers to make school a healthier place by educating them about health issues and building washrooms and latrines
  • Support the Public Health Office with outreach clinics providing vaccination and health checks for people who don’t live near health clinics and hospitals
  • Collaborate with local community health workers and make homes a healthier place, for example by installing smokeless stoves
