Support women’s human rights with a tweet!

10 December 2013
Regular followers of this blog will remember that we recently highlighted activity around the UN International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women (https://www.un.org/en/events/endviolenceday/). The 25th of November was the first day of 16 days of action opposing violence against women. Well, today is the last of those days of action and it’s timed to coincide with another important anniversary. Today, the 10th of December, is Human Rights Day. It’s also a day on which we and our friends at Say NO – UNiTE to End Violence against Women would like to encourage our supporters to make a real online noise about ending all forms of violence against women and girls everywhere. Say NO – UNiTE to End Violence against Women (http://saynotoviolence.org) and UN Women (http://www.unwomen.org) have come up with an impressive way to wrap up the 16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence Campaign. It’s an all-day tweetathon. Starting from 12 AM EST today, organisations and activists around the world working to end violence against women and girls and to protect women’s human rights will be leading conversations on Twitter about the issue. And there’s no shortage of conversations you can join. Just check out @PixelProject @UNVolunteers @takebackthetech @16DaysCampaign @DominemoslasTIC @UN_Women @NNEDV @GirlsNotBrides @YWCA_Canada @breakthrough and @SayNO_UNiTE. If you have ideas, resources or actions you can share, use the hashtag #16Days and promote the tweetathon or post messages on your social media accounts. We’ve already put this one up on Facebook ourselves: ‘Violence against women and girls is one of the most widespread violations of human rights. How can we prevent and stop it? To wrap up the 16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence, join <@SayNO – UNiTE to End Violence against Women> and partners for an all-day tweetathon on Tuesday, 10 December! Follow the hashtag #16days on Twitter. http://owl.li/rxiqp’ UN Women, by the way, is the UN organisation dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women. There’s even more information (and some tweets) at www.unwomen.org/en/news/stories/2013/12/tweetathon-to-wrap-up-sixteen-days-of-activism. And remember: this may be the formal end of 16 days of action but it is not the end of a campaign. It can’t end while one in three women and girls experience violence in their lifetime.
