The Gift of Giving

The Christmas holidays are a time for us to take a break, get together with friends and family, share some good food and reflect on the year gone by. It’s also a time we exchange gifts … It’s a time of giving.

In Kenya, it is also time to harvest Maize which when ground into flour is cooked to become a dish called Ugali - this is the main daily meal with families all over Kenya.  In Kericho County, where our work is based, the people are dealing with unexpected rains over the last month which has led to flooding, mud slides, delayed the harvest and in some cases even destroyed the maize. Wet and muddy conditions under foot and damp, wet houses has had a knock-on effect on people’s health and subsequent income. It’s not the most ideal end to 2019 for many of the Communities we are working with

Our programmes support the people we work with to build healthier and more resilient communities – to access improved health, education and employment opportunities – so that when the unexpected happens, like the rains this month, they are stronger and more able to deal with the consequences.

This Christmas, as it is a time of giving – we are asking you to give your support to our programmes in Kenya. Your donation this Christmas will keep on giving throughout the year – It Is The Gift of Giving!

Giving can be in the form of a once off Donation, little or large everything is very much appreciated

We are also appealing for Regular Donors – people who will set up a regular donation for example, in the form of a monthly standing order, which for Brighter Communities Worldwide allows us to plan for the future, offers stability, regular income and overall brighter futures for the people we work with in Kenya and Uganda

Here’s what your Donation can do:

  • Your €50 can provide a Smokeless Stove for one family to cook with and transform their home into a healthier place to live in
  • Your €10 can support a girl to stay in school through purchasing a Sanitary Kit and learning about Reproductive Health
  • Your €45 can provide a 10 day training for one volunteer who will go on to look after up to 30 household in their local area as a Community Health Volunteer
  • Provide schools with water tanks and better toilets – a water tank & handwashing stations costs approximately €10 per child and a block of toilets costs €22 per child – both will protect children from sickness and missing out on school.
  • Your €20 can provide one person with a 3 day course in Basic Business Skills
  • Your €16 can allow one girl to participate in a 5 day Alternative Rite of Passage (ARP) course. All of the traditional wisdom, values and Lifeskills are passed on to the girl through this coming of age rite but without the life threatening practice of female genital mutilation (FGM).
  • Your €10 can provide one Community Health Volunteer with a day’s training course on Maternal Health
  • Your €28 can provide a community volunteer with a 3 day course to learn about care of Tourists; Guiding Walks; Conservation & Environment
